Check-in: 25 September, 2026

I just got the text from my Mom that my uncle has just passed. He’s been in hospice for a few months. My brother and I went out to see him over a weekend this summer, and he was already in the hospital and not doing well. The last time we talked, he gave me his confidence in my academic pursuits. Mom had just traveled out to see him, and I think the latest trip was because she knew it was coming. I’m glad she could be there with him.

Man, what a day. What a couple of weeks. I need to check this shit in.

I have somehow lost weight. I’m not sure how that’s happened, since I’ve barely worked out for weeks. I need to get some in this weekend. I was able to finish my 2.5ish mile run earlier this week, but just the once, and that was the only workout I’ve had so far. I should get one in early tomorrow. That’ll be good for me, and not just my physical health.

I finally got a handle on my school work load, and I was even able to get out to hang with some friends a few times. Not as much as I would like, but you know. Gotta do what I gotta do. This week ended with my first two college exams, the first two tests for grades that I’ve had in over 20 years. I’ve been keeping up in class, doing the homework, trying my best to understand. I spent time studying, and I think that was good. I don’t know my scores yet, but I think I did alright. I don’t think I did great, which does bum me out a little, but I’m sure I at least passed. I can also say that I got a lot of it without a lot of worry, so I think that proves that I’m on plan, which was to actually learn this shit.

It is driving me a little crazy to not know.

So far, grade wise, I think I’m doing pretty well. The hope is that my exam performance didn’t just tank things, or if it did, that I can learn from it and study up for the next section.

I have another mountain of Engineering homework, so that’s fun. We got assigned to our groups, and I got the group that I wanted, but I should have been paying more attention. It turned out that the project I wanted was already camped out by a group of friends, and they already knew what they wanted to do. This isn’t terrible, I should make that clear – I like these guys. They seem smart and interested in it. I just kinda wish I’d been more involved, and that I’d like to get really involved as we go. I think I’m going to try to over-deliver in this stage, if I can manage. Really dig in on the things I’ve been assigned, which are mostly research that I’m actually not that interested in. I’m also going to try my hand at the parts I’m not assigned, because I should have time and also I am far more interested in them. I don’t expect we’ll at all need them as a group, so I’m not sure if I’ll share them – I’m worried that I’ll be stepping on toes if I do. But I want to practice, and I’ll get it even if it’s just on the side and for myself.

The biggest problem right now is that the whole group’s deliverables for this first round are due Thursday by like, 11 AM. I’m also not 100% sure just what the actual list of deliverables is, or whom is responsible for what. That last part is kinda on the professor, though it’ll be on me if I don’t either figure it out or reach out to her for clarification. And i better do so soon. So I need to prioritize making sure I know, understand, and am able to deliver on the parts I’m assigned, and to do my best with them. Then I can dick around with the extra stuff that I want to do.

Dude, I have so much more to talk about, and I am just not going to get to it. It’s already 9PM on Friday, and I am very tired. I knocked a few things off of my personal to do list – vehicle emissions and eye checkup. So that’s good. Still more, always more, always so very much more to do.

That’s it for today. Keep on keepin’ on, y’all.
